Summary: In the article "Master's of Desire: The Culture of American Advertising," Jack Solomon states that advertisers use different tactics to get people to buy products. For example Jack Solomon claims, live the fantasy, fear and trembling in the marketplace, and the future of an illusion are all different ways advertisers use to get people to buy their products. He quotes, "By reading the signs of American advertising, we can conclude that America is a nation of fantasizers, often preferring the sign to the substance and easily enthralled by a veritable Fantasy Island of commercial illusions." By this he means us Americans desire a lot. We are easily impressed and want everything that we know we can't own. Furthermore Jack Solomon argues, "If dream and desire can be exploited in the quest for sales, so can nightmare and fear." What he is insinuating is that there is also fear in advertisements, to have buyers with either guilt, atonement, or to feel a sense of belonging. Us Americans like to feel like we belong so if we don't buy a product that we see on TV and everyone has that product we feel left out we feel like we need that product to belong in society. Lastly Solomon states the future of illusion which is similar to the live the fantasy. He quotes, "Our eyes don't have zoom lenses, and we don't look at things with our heads cocked to one side." He means that we don't see everything clear; but that's okay because its the irony of the "new realism" is that it is more unrealistic, more artificial, than the ordinary run of television advertising. We shouldn't expect any truly realistic ads in the future, because a realistic ad is contradiction in terms, Jack Solomon states. Concluding all these tactics that are being used proves that advertisers use them to capture our attention and get us to buy their product.
Response: I agree with Solomon when he states that America is a nation of fantasizers. I agree with that statement because it applies to the commercial I chose to write about. "The Old Navy Jean's" commercial uses the live the fantasy method. In the commercial you have a beautiful tropical island with the "ideal man" proposing to a woman. It's all a woman desires having the perfect vacation with the perfect man and getting asked for marriage. All ads use different tactics, methods, symbols, or signs to capture consumers attention.

"Working Mothers Are Benefiting the Family"
SUMMARY: In the essay, "Working Mothers Are Benefiting the Family" by Supreet Mann she claims that working women are benefiting the family. She argues about stereotyping against women and gives examples on how it is benefiting for women to work. Mann says, "While some believe that working women are harming the family, I feel that working women are benefiting their families and teaching their children valuable life lessons." Supreet Mann quotes (karaim) "Two-parent families in which both parents work make an average of 26,000 more than families in which only one parent works." She states that she has seen many examples of this in her own life. She says that in her family, having a mother that works has made enormous financial benefits. Supreet Mann claims that their dependent on her mother's job for their health and dental insurance, which without life would be much more difficult for them. Finally Supreet Mann concludes that not only do working women bring an extra income, but they help to instill in their children a good work ethic.
RESPONSE: I totally agree with what Supreet Mann states because I do feel that working women benefit the family. For example, my mother has been working all her life ever since I can remember. My mother has supported me and has provided for me whenever I needed her. I'm glad she has a job because she shows me she is strong enough to do it all on her own. She has showed me to be independent and a hard working lady. Some may argue that working women are causing divorce and are not having time for their family. I disagree with that because anything can cause a divorce, it's always up to you to make your own choices. And even though women may not have enough time for their kids there is always more free time and the father can also be there for their children. It all depends on how you handle the situation. You should always put your part and effort in your family. So people should break that stereotype of women having to be home instead of working. Working women are independent, intelligent, successful, and determined. That's why people should find it benefiting for a women to work and women should be held in high esteem for their contribution.

2B OR NOT 2B BLOG 4
SUMMARY: In the essay "2b or Not 2b", David Crystal gives his opinion on texting. David first starts off by stating John Humphry's argument towards texters. Which is, "vandals who are doing to our language what Genghis Khan did to his neighbours 800 years ago. They are destroying it: pillaging our punctuation; savaging our sentences; raping our vocabulary. And they must be stopped." What John Humphry's argument basically states is that he doesn't like texting he believes it destroys our language. David Crystal disagrees with John Humphry's argument and states his own opinion. David says, "Texting is the latest manifestation of the human ability to be linguistically creative and to adapt to suit the demands and diverse settings. " David believes that texting is no disaster pending. Throughout the essay David list statics on how texting rocketed. He also adds research findings that show that texting improves literacy skills. David believes texting in a small way is language in evolution.
RESPONSE: I agree with David Crystal, I believe texting is no harm to us humans we just can't over use it. We have to learn and respect when to use texting. Texting isn't a disaster to our language, us humans are the ones who decide what to use in our daily works of life. For example, if you were to write an essay you wouldn't want to write it as if you were texting. That wouldn't look professional and you wouldn't be taken seriously. We have to learn when it's right to use, " BRB, LOL, TTYL, and ILY." Texting doesn't harm our language it evolves within time and makes each new generation use different words. Texting is a brilliant way to miscommunicate how you feel, and misinterpret what other people mean.

Sample Essay #1 Mastery Essay Douglas Ross BLOG 2
Summary: In this essay Douglas states that in society today, we are faced with the great problem of thousands of children who are born and who are not wanted. He says that this is a problem that has existed for ages, and is ever increasing today. His thesis states that this mentality is unfortunately not practiced among teens, taught by parents at home, or sold in the media today. Douglas believes that many young couples who are obviously unable to raise a child refuse to use birth control because they believe that a pregnancy could never happen to them. He attends a public school and has heard many teen mom stories and some of them said being pregnant never crossed their minds. Another reason he says many couples choose not to use birth control when either partner wants a child is because they were raised irresponsibly. He says a lot of children grow up in a consequence free environment. The response in many cases is that many can't see far enough ahead and realize that there are consequences to every action that we make. The last example he gives is that society sells instant gratification. Advertisements give the impression that you should live for the moment. His conclusion is that he believes that through more responsible parenting and more responsible advertising, we can create a more responsible environment.
Response: I somewhat agree with Douglas. I don't agree with the part were he says teens don't use birth control because of their parents. In my own opinion you should be old enough to know what the consequences and outcomes will be. I do think you should be raised in an environment filled with rules so you won't be in a consequence free environment. However, it all depends on the person you are to make the choices you make! Don't blame parents about it, you should be old and wise enough to make the actions you make and the decisions you take.

"Creative Solutions To Life's challenges" by Frank X Walker
Summary:
I read a variety of essays from the "This I Believe" website. The one that stood out to me the most was "Creative Solutions To Life's challenges" by Frank X Walker. In the essay, the author states that he believes that what we often call survival skills is simply creativity at work. He believes that artist aren't the only creative people. He says barbers, cooks, janitors, and kids enrich the world with their creativity as much as the painters, sculptors, and writers. Throughout the essay he says how he grew up and how his mother would be a creative cook. His mother would cook for him and all seven of his siblings, making them think it was a different meal. He was appreciated on how much a creative cook can do with a single potato. And it wasn't just in the kitchen where his mom would be creative. She would flip her old sewing machine upright, study pictures in books and magazines, then make ethnic versions of those same dolls and stuffed animals to sell at church fundraisers. She would also make her own clothes and all his sisters' prom and wedding dresses. She made being creative as normal as breathing and encouraged their participation by telling them that "idle hands and minds were the devil's workshop." Frank believes that happy children are those given the freedom to be expressive, to discover, and to create. Frank was bullied by his neighbors and throughout high school, words have continued to serve as his first weapon of choice and his salvation. He states that many of life's challenges need creative solutions. He believes that in all its many forms, can change the way we think and operate. Celebrating the creativity around us helps maintain our sanity and keeps us happy.
Response:
As I was reading this essay it opened my eyes and helped me out on a situation that I am recently going through. Recently a loved one passed and it hurt me very much till this day I can't get over it. It's a tough tragic situation to go through and it won't be easy to get through. The grieving is a process and is painful. However, this essay made me realize you can go through life's challenges by being creative. Everyone may have their own opinions or ways on how to deal with these situations. My way is through prayer, art, photography, and singing. These are all ways to express yourself and let out anything that may harm you. I believe being creative is a gift and you have the right to use it!
