Sample Essay #1 Mastery Essay Douglas Ross BLOG 2

Summary: In this essay Douglas states that in society today, we are faced with the great problem of thousands of children who are born and who are not wanted. He says that this is a problem that has existed for ages, and is ever increasing today. His thesis states that this mentality is unfortunately not practiced among teens, taught by parents at home, or sold in the media today. Douglas believes that many young couples who are obviously unable to raise a child refuse to use birth control because they believe that a pregnancy could never happen to them. He attends a public school and has heard many teen mom stories and some of them said being pregnant never crossed their minds. Another reason he says many couples choose not to use birth control when either partner wants a child is because they were raised irresponsibly. He says a lot of children grow up in a consequence free environment. The response in many cases is that many can't see far enough ahead and realize that there are consequences to every action that we make. The last example he gives is that society sells instant gratification. Advertisements give the impression that you should live for the moment. His conclusion is that he believes that through more responsible parenting and more responsible advertising, we can create a more responsible environment.

Response: I somewhat agree with Douglas. I don't agree with the part were he says teens don't use birth control because of their parents. In my own opinion you should be old enough to know what the consequences and outcomes will be. I do think you should be raised in an environment filled with rules so you won't be in a consequence free environment. However, it all depends on the person you are to make the choices you make! Don't blame parents about it, you should be old and wise enough to make the actions you make and the decisions you take.

"Creative Solutions To Life's challenges" by Frank X Walker

Summary:

I read a variety of essays from the "This I Believe" website. The one that stood out to me the most was "Creative Solutions To Life's challenges" by Frank X Walker. In the essay, the author states that he believes that what we often call survival skills is simply creativity at work. He believes that artist aren't  the only creative people. He says barbers, cooks, janitors, and kids enrich the world with their creativity as much as the painters, sculptors, and writers. Throughout the essay he says how he grew up and how his mother would be a creative cook. His mother would cook for him and all seven of his siblings, making them think it was a different meal. He was appreciated on how much a creative cook can do with a single potato. And it wasn't just in the kitchen where his mom would be creative. She would flip her old sewing machine upright, study pictures in books and magazines, then make ethnic versions of those same dolls and stuffed animals to sell at church fundraisers. She would also make her own clothes and all his sisters' prom and wedding dresses. She made being creative as normal as breathing and encouraged their participation by telling them that "idle hands and minds were the devil's workshop." Frank believes that happy children are those given the freedom to be expressive, to discover, and to create. Frank was bullied by his neighbors and throughout high school, words have continued to serve as his first weapon of choice and his salvation. He states that many of life's challenges need creative solutions. He believes that in all its many forms, can change the way we think and operate. Celebrating the creativity around us helps maintain our sanity and keeps us happy.

Response:

As I was reading this essay it opened my eyes and helped me out on a situation that I am recently going through. Recently a loved one passed and it hurt me very much till this day I can't get over it. It's a tough tragic situation to go through and it won't be easy to get through. The grieving is a process and is painful. However, this essay made me realize you can go through life's challenges by being creative. Everyone may have their own opinions or ways on how to deal with these situations. My way is through prayer, art, photography, and singing. These are all ways to express yourself and let out anything that may harm you. I believe being creative is a gift and you have the right to use it!
